CSA for Christmas

A CSA share is, in many ways, truly the "gift that keeps on giving"! Purchasing a share for a family member or friend will give them the pleasure of receiving a farm-fresh box of produce each week for 25 weeks. In other words, 1 gift for 25 "presents" delivered throughout the 2018 growing season (June through November)! As a new member, they will also receive a complementary cookbook for delicious recipe ideas! 

Your generosity will not stop there! The gift will also extend to our community of organic growers and their families. Each CSA subscription provides them with the means to continue to grow high-quality and beautiful food, as well as the necessary support to maintain their agrarian family life. They look at each CSA subscription as a "gift" in of itself!

You'll need the gift recipient's name, address, phone number and email address. (If you'd prefer to keep this gift a secret until exchanging gifts — when asked for an email address, enter yours and we will make the necessary change following the holidays.)

Pastured Turkeys For Sale

Your CRO growers are back at it again! ... Daniel and Arlene Miller are raising pastured turkeys for your 2017 Thanksgiving celebrations. Keeping with tradition, their birds were raised on the healthy diet of pasture, bugs, seeds, (locally-grown) non-GMO grains, and scraps of the organically-grown produce grown on the farm.

A farm-fresh holiday Turkey will range from 17-19 lbs, and can be reserved and picked up at any of our current CSA pickup locations the week before the holiday (the week of November 12th).

Turkeys are $75.82 for all weights, approximately $4.46/lb.

Autumn CSA Potluck

Autumn is here — which calls to mind colorful foliage, decorative squashes, bushel baskets of fruit, and countless other images of rustic beauty. Why not experience them all first-hand while joining us for another CSA farmer/member appreciation Potluck lunch!

Don't miss another opportunity to visit the land on which your food is grown, to personally meet some of your growers and their families, and to mingle with other CSA members and CRO staff!

Schmucker Family Farms will be our host on Saturday, October 7th. The Potluck lunch will begin at noon, with plenty of time afterwards to walk through the farm and speak with the farmers (and their families). Tobie will allow us to walk alongside his apple trees and take home some apples, too!

Registration Open: Peak of Season CSA ... Sign Up Now!

Unfamiliar but curious about Community Supported Agriculture? Interested in supporting local, organic, family farmers? Do you enjoy fresh, nutritious and delicious(!) food? Well...

Our Peak of the Season CSA gives members a weekly farm-share from our harvest every week during August and September! Shares will contain some of the most anticipated fruits and vegetables of the summer: tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, melons, beans, squash and more!

Don't miss a great opportunity to become connected to where and who your food comes from, while also receiving the freshest and high quality produce available. Not to mention receiving and eating many items you can't find anywhere else!

Tour de Farm

Come join us to celebrate the start of a new growing season! Spring has sprung, and our green-cloaked farms are richly covered with healthy lettuces, fruit seedlings, and other delicious plants seeking to show off their early-season growth! Come see for yourself ... oh, and don't forget: there will be some animals to visit, too! Why not enjoy a potluck, a hay wagon tour, and some Kale (and possibly strawberry) picking?!

"Bacon" In The Sun

Pork flavor comes down to three things: breed, diet and quality of life. If you take a great heirloom breed, feed it a diverse natural diet and keep it happy and healthy you'll get the best pork you've ever tasted. That's what you get in a Clarion River Organics pork share.

The red coat is a Tamworth and the black coats are Berkshires.
Like our cattle, our hogs are bred and raised on one of our co-op farms. The farm is named Hill Top Farm, and Emanuel Schmidt and his family tend to it. Emanuel raises two different types of hogs: Berkshire and Tamworth.

Tamworth hogs are one of the oldest pig breeds. They tend to be leaner with good texture and a balanced flavor, and have a reputation of providing the best bacon! Berkshire hogs are also an older breed, and are known to have darker and more marbled meat that produces a delicious buttery flavor.

Our hogs are raised in pasture and have access to large amounts of hickory nuts, which both breeds have a nose for! This helps to give them a natural hickory flavor.

Though they are not certified organic, the hogs are fed non-GMO feed and scraps of our organic produce. Antibiotics are only used in extreme cases, in small doses, and long before the hogs are sent to the butcher so the antibiotics are out of their system.

The hogs are sent to a local butcher who adds no MSG or artificial color to any of the sausage or cured meat. The hams and bacon do have nitrates though.

The total price of the share is $378. 
A share is equivalent of 1/4 of a pig (48 lbs). 
You can expect three deliveries of 16 lbs. each in June, August and October. You'll get a mix of bacon, ham, roasts, sausage, and ground pork.

Summer is Coming ... So Beef Up!

At CRO we are proud of the type of meat we can offer to our members. Our pride stems from the fact that our animals are humanely tended to — and are healthy as a result. This makes our meat better tasting, better for your health, and better for the earth.

Our cattle farmers are James and Emanuel Schmucker. The brothers both raise their cattle in open organic pasture for an all grass diet supplemented in the winter with  organic hay. They've chosen a cross of Limousin and Angus breeds for their ability to turn pure grass into delicious beef. The Schmuckers use no growth hormones or antibiotics. And all of our beef is MSG and nitrate free.

Our farmers are convinced that the grass-fed process of raising cattle is a considerably healthier and much more sustainable way of raising cattle than the current industrial process of raising cattle in lots. The industrial process leads to unhealthy conditions for the animals. Large herds packed in tight quarters leads to higher emission and exposure to methane gas, and higher risks of diseases spreading to them and, in the end, us too! Our farmers do just the opposite. Cattle are raised in smaller herds and are given plenty of land to roam and graze, which ends with healthier animals and, of course, healthier meat.

Here is some information regarding our Beef Shares for Summer 2017:
Total cost of a beef share is $489.
You will receive 48 lbs. of beef (which is about 1/8 of a cow).
You can expect three deliveries of 16 lbs. each in June, August and October.
You will receive around 4 roasts, 15 steaks, 20 lbs. of ground beef, and some braising meat. Offal cuts (heart, liver, tongue, bones) can be included by request and does not count toward the overall weight of your share. Availability may be limited.

How to Get Involved with CSA Day 2017

Are your New Year’s resolutions already in the rearview mirror? If so, you’re not alone, but you still have time to make good on those resolutions. Clarion River Organics is joining other farms from around the country for the third annual CSA Day on February 24, when you can join other like-minded people around the country who are committed to:

  • eating healthful foods and preparing them for their families;
  • supporting their local farmers;
  • being kind to our planet;
  • learning something new; and
  • being adventurous in the kitchen.
According to Small Farm Central’s CSA Farming Annual Report, the most popular time to join a CSA each year is at the end of February. To promote this important time for farmers, CSA Daywas coined, and each year it falls on the last Friday in February. It’s an entire day dedicated to the celebration of community-supported agriculture, and CSA farmers enjoy an influx of sign-ups from members, which gives them revenue when they need it most for the growing season.

Getting food from a CSA is different from going to a farmers market or using a grocery delivery service. As a CSA member, you make a seasonal commitment to a small farmer in your area and the produce is delivered to a pickup spot near you. CSA members take pleasure in knowing where and how their food is grown and in having a relationship with their farmer. 

CSA (community-supported agriculture) is a subscription to a season’s worth of sustainable, locally grown produce that is distributed to members throughout the harvesting season. It is a form of investment that allows small farmers to continue growing on a scale that may not be sustainable without the CSA model. CSA members enjoy the quality of fresh fruits and vegetables for their family, while supporting their local farmer.
