It may be hard to think about Spring, farmers, and fresh produce when you're shoveling your way out of the house everyday, but now is the best time to support your local farmers!
National CSA Sign-up Day was chosen as February 28th because it is the most popular day of the entire year to sign up for a CSA share and farms from around the country are celebrating National CSA Sign-Up Day together this Saturday. Buying a CSA share in late winter is important because farmers are making the capital investments for this year’s harvest now and the CSA model means they do not need to finance these costs with costly credit.
“Members of our CSA have been the key to our business growing and helping our member families work together on their land,” says Zeb Bartels, the general manager of the CRO cooperative. “CSAs give us a shot of cash to help buy seeds and supplies in the spring and they guarantee an outlet for our freshest produce throughout the summer and fall. Plus we love getting to know our customers and sharing the farm life with them. Our customers benefit by getting our best produce a day or two fresher than they can get it at the store and by getting to know the farmers who grow their food.”
